Test Results

Notes:

This class was chosen because they were just beginning serious study of language. These are typical of students at Highland Academy and they were grouped together before being selected as a pilot class for America’s Phonics.

It should be noted that the students in this pilot class started in America’s Phonics as third graders and as of May  31, 1997 they will have completed the fifth grade. They averaged 2.3 grade levels per year and all are above the eighth grade level at this time.

The Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT) test was used to arrive at these ratings. (These results were confirmed in part by word skill scores of three of these students using Woodcock Johnson tests).

Students PM & CS left the program after the first year. They were deemed by parents and counselors to be ready to move on. Student PM was part of this class for reasons other than language as is obvious in the chart.

 Notes:

This chart includes students of various grade levels that started in America’s Phonics during 1995.
Their reading acquisition averaged 2.2 grade levels per year.
The Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT) test was used to arrive at these ratings.

Notes:

The period of this chart covers eight months and the students averaged 2.2 grade levels.
This chart includes the students that started in America’s Phonics at the beginning of the 1996-97 school year.

They were all taught by teachers new to America’s Phonics that had their training in the program during the summer of 1996.

Only those students whose language skills were a factor are included in the group.  Some older students whose test scores are at and beyond the ninth grade were eliminated because including them would distort the picture. Plus, students who were enrolled at the first grade and kindergarten were not included even though some beginning work was done to study individual phonics symbols and sounds.
